I have spent my life following stories that live at the intersection of art, music, spirituality, and the human search for meaning.
My journey began in Athens, Georgia, in the 1980s, when I was studying photography at the University of Georgia and photographing the city's extraordinary independent music scene. I was drawn to artists who were creating something before anyone knew what it would become—R.E.M., the Chickasaw Mudd Puppies, and the larger creative community that included Pylon and the B-52s.

I learned early that my camera was not simply a recording device. It was a way of entering a world.
​
After moving to Los Angeles and founding Romanski Films, my path carried me from music into documentary filmmaking, yoga, India, sacred traditions, and the worlds of spiritual teachers, artists, musicians, dancers, healers, and indigenous communities.
​
For more than two decades, I have traveled with a camera, documenting people whose lives are devoted to something larger than themselves. My work has taken me from the sacred landscapes of India and Africa to intimate conversations with artists and spiritual practitioners in the United States and around the world.
​
Music eventually brought me back to where I began—only this time through the lens of devotion. I became a filmmaker and photographer within the global Bhakti community, documenting the growing movement of kirtan, yoga, meditation, and devotional music. Here I discovered a profound connection between my earliest years photographing musicians and the spiritual world that had become my own path.
​
The question had changed, but the impulse was the same: What moves through an artist when they give themselves completely to the work? That question continues to guide my filmmaking.
​
I am interested in the story beneath the story—the person behind the public image, the silence between the words, the life behind the performance.​ My work is rooted in deep listening, presence, and trust. I approach documentary not simply as an observer, but as a witness.
My podcast, Unburied Voice: Story as Medicine, extends this work into conversation, exploring the stories we carry, the stories we inherit, and the stories that become medicine when we finally give them voice.

Julianne’s documentaries have screened internationally and received numerous accolades, including Winner of Best Cinematography at the Rishikesh International Film Festival for Keepers of the Song, and Semi-Finalist for Best Short Film at the Paris Women Film Festival. Keepers of the Song was also featured at the Brussels World Film Festival, Santa Barbara Film Festival, Goa Short Film Festival, Topanga Film Festival, and Bernardsville Film Festival.
Her short film Massai Women was featured at The Dublin World Film Festival, ABQ India Film Festival (Finalist for Best Short Documentary), and the Stockholm Short Film Festival. Her film MotherBlood, exploring the Israel–Middle East conflict, premiered at the World of Women Film Fair Middle East. The Power of Dance, her documentary on international artist Colleena Shakti, was featured at the Ocean City Film Festival and Roselle Park Short Film Festival, and won at the Canada Shorts International Film Festival.

Julianne served as Director of Film Interviews for Dance of the Wild, contributing to the intimate storytelling and spiritual narrative framework of the project.

Her most recent work, The Mother Matrix, filmed in southern India, is currently in post-production.

Julianne has filmed and photographed many of the world’s foremost spiritual, musical, and humanitarian leaders, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Wangari Maathai, Krishna Das, Mooji, Amritananda Guruji, Swami Vidyadhishananda, Mark S.G. Dyczkowski, and wildlife biologist Allan Savory. Her work has appeared on CNN and WDR Germany and has been honored by the Charles Forbes Foundation for excellence in the arts.

As a photographer, Julianne’s visual practice extends her cinematic eye into fine art portraiture and photojournalism. Her photographs are portals of remembrance — capturing essence, embodiment, and soul.

Her photography has been published in Yoga Journal, Yoga International, Whole Life Times, Common Ground Magazine, CSQ Quarterly, Tathaastu Magazine, South China Morning Post, and the Ojai Foundation Quarterly. She is the photographer and creative director of the books Freedom & Feminism (2019), The Goddess & The Guru (2017), and Gifts from the Goddess (2019).
